Question regarding ping

I see people saying you can go higher settings before you look blatant if you are on higher ping (eg 120 vs 70). Would it be a good idea to artificially raise my ping (with use of a further vpn server) or such to get more of an advantage with reach or am I just being stupid? I'm usually on like 70 ping (I haven't bought the client yet however I intend to) so wouldn't I have to use lower settings like 3.1 instead of 3.2/3.3/3.4 on hypixel? Am I just being stupid?
