Integrate something like ViaVersion in the client. I think there's also 2 other mods that do the same but I can't recall the names. I don't remember which client it was maybe Inertia but it had the possibility to spoof MC versions allowing you to join 1.12.2+ servers etc on a 1.8 client and...
