Cigarette butts are the most common garbage in the United States. Throwing ass is also a big problem in beaches and oceans all over the world.

Although e-cigarettes still generate some garbage, switching to e-cigarettes can help clean up streets, parks and beaches and prevent toxic chemicals from leaching into the environment from used cigarette butts.

The problem of cigarette butts

Cigarette butts have always accounted for about 30-40% of all garbage collected in urban and coastal cleanup. Despite the fact that in many Western countries, smoking rates have been declining.

A survey of "Keep America Beautiful" road waste found that, like other tobacco products such as cigars and tobacco packaging, cigarette butts are the largest garbage collected. Cigarette butts accounted for 38% of the 51.2 billion garbage collected.

In the cleaning of retail areas, storm drains, construction sites, parks and playgrounds, cigarette butts are also the first items collected.

In the United States, littering is not just a problem. The Marine Conservation Association's latest survey of trash collected on the beaches and oceans on the planet shows that cigarette butts have risen by nearly 2.5 million, which is enough to delimit the distance of five marathons.

Cleaning up after the dropper is expensive. A study found that a city the size of San Francisco spends an average of US$500,000 to US$6 million per year to keep streets and parks away from littering.

The environmental impact of tobacco waste is not as widely known as the health impact of tobacco. However, some facts are disturbing.

Almost all cigarette filters are made of plastic fibers that are not easily degradable.

Observational studies and self-reports of smokers indicate that one-third to two-thirds of cigarette butts smoked are thrown into the surrounding environment or dumped in rain drains.

A study on smokers’ attitudes towards tobacco waste found that almost one-tenth (8.2%) of smokers believe that cigarette butts do not litter, while nearly one-fifth (17.6%) believe that cigarette butts are biodegradable of.

Cigarette butts also cause more direct environmental problems. Another study by Elli Slaughter of San Diego State University found that if a cigarette butt is dropped into one liter of water, the residual tobacco smell on a cigarette butt can kill 50% of fish.

Birds and other animals may also eat cigarette butts, and the chemicals in the cigarette butts can seep into the earth and water system.

The researchers called for a variety of measures to prevent cigarette butts from becoming an environmental crisis, including redesigning cigarette products, and called on tobacco companies to help pay for cigarette butts.

No, no cigarette butts

Many smokers use electronic cigarettes to help them quit smoking. A landmark government study in the UK shows that e-cigarettes are 95% safer than combustible cigarettes. But you can switch to electronic cigarettes to help save the environment and health.

We think it is safe to say that e-cigarettes generate less waste than combustible cigarettes. We also believe that it can be said that e-cigarettes and their components are less likely to be thrown on the roadside or buried on the beach, and more likely to be sent to landfills or recycled.

We believe that a lot of academic literature and media reviews fail to mention one thing, that is, different types of e-cigarettes have different consequences for garbage.

For example, a study comparing the toxic leaching of electronic cigarettes and combustible cigarettes concluded that the toxic leaching of electronic cigarettes is ten times that of ordinary tobacco cigarettes. But it only focuses on one brand of disposable electronic cigarettes.

The three most common types of e-cigarettes are:

• Disposable electronic cigarette

•Pod mod devices, such as JUUL electronic cigarettes

• Reinstallable equipment such as boxed equipment

Although they both evaporate e-liquid, the design of these products means that they generate varying amounts of waste.

Disposable electronic cigarettes are disposable. They lasted hundreds of puffs and then they were thrown away. Many disposable e-cigarettes say that they are equivalent to about 40 cigarettes, so even if the disposable e-cigarette is thrown away, it can still save 40 cigarette butts.

Pod mod devices like the market-leading JUUL device are more trash friendly. The device itself can be used for a long time, but many devices have disposable pods that are thrown away after two hundred times.

You can reduce the impact of pod mod equipment by using a refillable Pod Mod system. Check out these excellent JUUL alternatives.

Refillable e-cigarettes such as boxed trash are arguably the easiest e-cigarettes to discard trash.

This is not to say that refillable e-cigarettes do not produce garbage. The e-cigarette or coil will degrade after a few weeks and needs to be thrown away.

But according to our experience, the possibility of throwing it in the trash can is greater than the possibility of throwing it on the street. In any case, an electronic cigarette may be "equivalent" to hundreds of cigarette butts, so you can save a lot of garbage.

E-liquid containers are another type of trash that can be filled with electronic cigarettes. However, glass and plastic bottles can usually be reused or cleaned and recycled to minimize the impact on the environment.

Lithium-ion batteries are another potential problem. But the batteries used in boxed modules are usually rechargeable and will not be routinely discarded. After the battery is used up, the battery can also be recycled by mail or a recycling program.

To be clear, we are not saying that e-cigarettes do not produce garbage. Switching from tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes can help save waste production.
