Minecraft doesn't require a lot of ram even with mods so it makes sense, allocating 4gb of ram is more than enough for most things and I think allocating more than required is just detrimental. The default for 1.8.9 is 2gb but I believe the requirement is 1/4 of that. From my experience my normal forge setup with around 20 mods run just fine on 2gb. Atm I use 3 & i've used 4 before but tbh i've seen no difference between them.

The only times you'd want to allocate 6+ is when you play massive modpacks.
