How do I use autohotbar?

I want to use autohotbar for skywars but it’s pretty confusing. I’d like to just select swords for slot one, throwables for slot 2, blocks for slot 3, etc, but I can only select specific items for specific slots.

Could someone let me know how to properly use autohotbar for skywars?
